Fears are put to one side for Great Devon Dangle.

DOZENS of brave souls took on the exposed conditions of Hartland’s cliffs to raise money for the North Devon Hospice at the weekend.

Hospice supporters – from teenagers to doctors – put their fears to one side to conquer the Great Devon Dangle, an exhilarating 180ft abseil down the rugged, sheer cliffs of Berry Head.

Charity spokesperson Gerard Fawcitt, said the popular event had been running annually for more than 10 years.

He said: “Having done this myself last year, I can tell you that it is an incredibly daunting challenge.

“Just peering over the cliff is scary enough, so I have huge admiration for those who were willing to strap into their harness and go over the edge.

“They are a very brave bunch, and they were helped along tremendously by the professionals from Skern Lodge, who kindly lent their expertise to make sure the whole event was safe and fun for all.”

Gerard said the sponsorship raised would help the hospice to provide essential care to local people.

“Our Danglers have been working hard to raise sponsorship in the run up to the event, and now people have seen what they have achieved I hope it will encourage them to donate even more.

“The event will raise several thousand pounds for North Devon Hospice, and every pound will really make a difference.”
