Hundreds of people paraded down the cobbled street, singing Christmas carols and enjoying hot drinks and mince pies.

CLOVELLY experienced a record crowd on Sunday at the annual Christmas Light Switch On event.

Hundreds of people gathered at the top of the cobbles to join Father Christmas and RNLI mascot Stormy Stan.

The group paraded down the steep, cobbled street, with Christmas music provided by the Appledore Training Band and Woolsery School Choir.

In total, the event raised £3,000 for the RNLI.

Tom Wiersma, RNLI press officer, said: “The event was such a success, at one point we almost had gridlock on the cobbles. It was an incredible turn-out.”

At the bottom of the hill, the crowds filled the harbour and lined the quay, with entertainment provided by Peter Lawrence and Tarka Radio.

Revellers enjoyed a hog roast, hot dogs and ‘Clovelly Grog’, and hot drinks and mince pies in the Lifeboat House.

A carol service was led by the Reverend Alan Glover, and after a traditional countdown, the lights were switched on by Edward Braund and Pauline Legg in memory of loved ones that Clovelly has lost this year.

Tom added: “This is the 13th year Norman Sanders has managed the lights for Clovelly RNLI, and he once again has produced a marvellous display.

“All the people of the village also made a wonderful job of decorating their houses and supporting this event.

“Such a fundraising total was unexpected and a great big thank you goes out to all our supporters.”
