Protestors vow to show strength of community feeling for local beauty spot

The people of Pilton took to the streets today (Saturday) to show their love for the Mannings Pit beauty spot.

The meadow and stream is much-loved in the area, but was recently sold and residents fear it will simply be developed into more housing.

About 100-strong, the marchers set off from Pilton Street and made their way to Barnstaple High Street, bearing placards and chanting ‘Save Mannings Pit’.

Resident Bev Snowden told the Gazette was about acknowledging how the community feel.

“Mannings Pit is special and it’s our green space – we draw the line,” she said.

“Pilton does not have a big, proper green space and children need areas where they can get out and play safely. I know there needs to be houses and other areas are being developed, but this is a particularly beautiful area.”

Mannings Pit was bought at auction for £250,000, together with an adjacent field located behind Yoiungs Drive, for £310,000, to an unknown buyer.

Many people at Pilton have said they grew up playing at Mannings Pit and it is popular with walkers of all ages.
