Inspirational finalists are honoured at the NDADA Inspiring People Awards 2017

A magnificent seven inspirational people were honoured at a special event in Barnstaple this evening (Friday).

The 2017 Inspiring People Awards were held at Boston Tea Party to celebrate those who play a motivating and inspiring part in the community.

The awards were hosted by North Devon Against Domestic Violence’s (NDADA) and saw the winners drawn from a shortlist after almost 100 nominations were submitted.

The winners included a surf life saver, septenarian triathlete, a fundraising GP and a charity hero.

Inspiring in the arts: Bill Buffery and Gill Nathanson

Bill and Gill are the Multi Story Theatre Company. They set up Barnstaple’s Fringe TheatreFest after taking part in Canadian Fringe festivals. Award sponsored by the White Moose gallery

Inspiring person under 21: Liv Bennett

Liv is a keen surfer. She has been a member of Croyde Surf Life Saving Club for 11 years, been coaching at Women on Waves since age 14 and volunteers at the charity Wave Project.

Peggy is 73-years-old, but took up jogging to help quit smoking and now competes in triathlons, has represented GB in the Age Group team, has won multiple medals at world and European level. She also cycled from Lands End to John O’Groats last August.

Inspiring person over 70: John Howell

John is a GP, he served in the RAF around the world (is a qualified pilot) and played hockey at county level. Two years ago he abseiled down St Augustine’s church tower in Heanton Punchardon in aid of the Seamoor chemotherapy unit.

Inspiring environmentalist: Martin Dorey

Martin started the Two Minute Beach Clean initiative with Tab Parry in 2013, using #2minutebeachclean it has gone worldwide with 220 special beach clean boards around the UK and Ireland.

Inspiring community work: Lisa Wallis

Lisa started the charity Chemo Hero after being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and the charity sees boxes of lovely treats given to people starting chemotherapy
