THE Ilfracombe RNLI inshore lifeboat was called out yesterday (Thursday) morning after a small RIB broke down near the town.

The rigid inflatable boat was found to the west of Ilfracombe after a few minutes of searching and had three people on board.

They were well equipped for sea with VHF radio, lifejackets, distress flares and GPS, but had been unable to restart their engine and contacted the coastguard for assistance.

The lifeboat crew rigged a tow and brought the RIB back to Ilfracombe Harbour, before helping the owners recover it on to their trailer.

“The three crew of the RIB were very unlucky to have their engine fail, but they took the right action in calling for assistance,” said Ilfracombe RNLI helmsman Stuart Carpenter.

“With the fast running tide and swell they could have found themselves in a great deal more difficulty before too long, so we are happy to have helped before a potentially dangerous situation arose.”
