LARGE crowds gathered along Appledore Quay to watch newly-built ship LÉ Samuel Beckett leave Appledore shipyard yesterday evening (Monday).

The 90-metre-long ship, named after the world renowned Irish literary figure, was launched in November last year but has been undergoing sea trials in recent months.

The ship’s primary objectives will be fisheries and maritime protection, and search and rescue.

It is one of two offshore patrol vessels being built in Appledore by Babcock International for the Irish Naval Service.

A second ship – set to be named the LÉ James Joyce – is still under construction at the Bidna Yard and is expected to launch later this year

A spokesperson for Babcock said: “The successful completion of this vessel is testament to the skills, dedication and workmanship of the entire team here in Appledore.”
