Barney Harwood joins Croyde Surf Life Saving Club plus Andrew Cotton as he prepares for his next big challenge.
BLUE Peter presenter Barney Harwood has been making waves filming in North Devon with grassroots youngsters and big wave surfer Andrew Cotton.
It is understood Barney is preparing for his latest Blue Peter challenge, to surf the Severn Bore in September so yesterday (Sunday) he joined ‘Cotty’ plus Croyde Surf Life Saving Club at the beach.
After a morning surf lesson with Andrew he spent the afternoon hosted by the club, joining in with its younger members on the beach and in the water.
“It was a cracking afternoon where we got to show him how to use rescue boards, race for flags, swim out back and he saw our surf skis in action as well as getting to go out in the inshore rescue boat,” said Paul Trueman from the club.
“The kids all loved it and he did pretty well, he was game for a laugh and seemed to enjoy it. He was a really good sport and posed for pictures afterwards, it was good fun and he seemed like a really good bloke.”
Blue Peter also contacted Andrew Cotton, who in conjunction with Lyndon Wake Surf School at Croyde, agreed to provide Barney with two days of coaching in preparation for his challenge.
“By the end of Monday he was catching waves by himself, which is where we wanted to get him to, so he should be up to scratch for surfing the bore,” said Andrew.
“It was good fun; he was up for it and really determined to be able to surf, as he has to do this challenge in September.”
