Centenary events held in the town today (Sunday) including wreath laying and parade through the town.

DOZENS of people lined the streets in Barnstaple to watch as a parade passed through the town to remember the fallen from the Great War.

Dignitaries, representatives from the armed forces, local cadet groups and members of the Royal British Legion gathered in Rock Park this morning (Sunday).

Wreaths were laid at the war memorial, led by Barnstaple Mayor Val Elkins, while prayers were said and the Last Post was played.

After the memorial service, a parade was led through the town to the Pannier Market where a drumhead service and act of remembrance took place.

The service was conducted by the Bishop of Crediton, the Right Reverend Nick McKinnel, and included a two minute silence and a selection of hymns led by the Barnstaple Concert Band.

There was then displays by the North Devon Pipes and Drums, Barnstaple Male Voice Choir and Barnstaple Youth Marching Band.

The event, organised by Barnstaple Town Council in conjunction with the Royal British Legion and Army Benevolent Fund, marked the centenary of the outbreak of World War One.
