HUNDREDS of pupils, parents and grandparents turned out to Sticklepath Community Primary School on Tuesday to set a new world record for a giant cream tea event.

A grand total of 642 people enjoyed a scone with cream and butter (or butter and cream!) in the afternoon sun at the Barnstaple school, smashing the old record of 536 set in Sydney, Australia.

The oldest participant was 101.

The world record attempt, which should be recognised after being officially confirmed, was the final event to celebrate the school’s 60th anniversary, following on from a flash mob in January and a recent sell-out performance at the Queen’s Theatre.

Class teacher, Matt Pennington said: “It’s an amazing achievement. We were very keen to get the record back for Devon from Australia.

“It’s been incredible to have so many people here from the community. It’s the perfect way to finish our anniversary celebrations.”

The mammoth challenge, which saw 650 cream teas contributed by Bidvest 3663, also meant a very busy day for kitchen manager Kathryn Hanlon and her team, who had been busily preparing since 7.30am.

“This is what a community school is,” she said. “It’s been absolutely amazing and a pleasure to be involved.

“A big thank you to my team, Lorraine Lewis and Samantha Green, and to Jody Hooker of 3663; without them this wouldn’t have been possible.”

  • Amazing, what a wonderful afternoon. Well done to all the staff and pupils, once again you have done yourselves proud. What an honour and a privilege to be part of such a great community and school.
