A well known special guest carries out the lighting of the lights in front of an audience of thousands.

A man who needed little introduction with his eye-catching costume and booming voice was the guest of honour for the annual switch on of the Ilfracombe Christmas lights.

Town Crier Roy Goodwin was asked by organisers Ilfracombe High Street Traders to lead the countdown to the big moment, watched by a large crowd.

As ever proceedings were conducted from an open topped bus provided by Woolacombe Bay Holiday Park, with Reverend Robert Harris leading a short service and carols by Holy Trinity Parish Church choir, joined by High Street Traders chairman David Williams and president Nick Pedlar plus The Mayor of Ilfracombe Councillor Rod Donovan. RNLI mascot Stormy Stan also lent a little nautical fun to the event.

Despite some heavy downpours, the numbers of people who turned out for the event were hardly diminished.

After the switch on at the war memorial the huge crowd made its way to the high Street where there was music, dancing, late night shopping and refreshments to enjoy, plus a visit to Santa at the Ilfracombe Indoor Market.
