More than 200 runners take on Rock Park challenge in fundraising extravaganza

HUNDREDS of people were out on Sunday to raise money for charity by running this year’s Sport Relief Mile.

In Barnstaple, more than 200 keen runners turned out at Rock Park to take on courses of one, three and six miles.

Runners of all ages got involved in the nationwide event, which will add to the £50million already raised on Friday night’s live BBC show.

Stephen Baker said his daughter Isabel wanted to run the mile after watching the show on Friday.

“It was a bit last minute!” he said. “Isabel said this morning that she wanted to have a go.”

Isabel said: “I wanted to give some money to charity after seeing Sport Relief on Friday – and I’m good at running!”

There were a real mix of people who took on the challenge this year, from serious runners to spiderman, teenage mutant ninja turtles and even a group of old-school aeronautical pilots.

Twenty-one of the Barnstaple air training corp.’s ‘Red Sparrows’ ran (or in some cases, marched) a mile, before taking on a 1.5km swim and 4.6 mile cycle – all dressed in flight suits and RAF jackets.

“Each cadet has raised about £100,” said the training corp.’s Glyn Clarke. “A number of the items we’re wearing today came from people responding to a piece in the paper, so we’d like to thank everyone for their donations.”

Event organiser Simon Haywood of North Devon Road Runners said there had been a flurry of interest in the run following Friday night’s Sport Relief programme.

“It’s been a great day enjoyed by all, raising lots of money for Sport Relief” he said.

“It’s all been really enjoyable and good fun. We’d love to do it again and look forward to hosting the mile in 2016.

“I’d also like to say thank you to Sainsbury’s for the tuna and bananas they donated for the runners and to the people from Trinity Church for their help with cakes and teas.”
