Highways teams work to clear the effects of flooding before icy weather hits later in the week.

HEAVY rainfall over the weekend has caused flooding in many parts of North Devon with a yellow weather warning still in force today (Monday).

But despite the rain set to ease off, a sub zero temperature drop predicted later in the week is causing new concerns.

Highways teams have been out scouting the road networks today and clearing up after the flooding this weekend.

In Barnstaple, the A377 has been closed due to flooding, as is the A399 due to a minor landslide.

Devon County Council has reported the road from Heasley Mill to Great Heasley near North Molton is closed due to road surface deterioration.

In Torrington the A386 is passable with care.

Chris Cranston, Devon County Council’s Highway Operations Control Centre Manager, said: “We’re targeting most of the problems on the main road network today, before we’re then able to look at making longer term repairs to areas damaged by the excessive rainfall and flooding.

“And we’re hoping to scout our minor road network for problems.

“But with frost expected from Tuesday night, we’re concerned about road conditions.

“Heavy leaf fall, wet road surfaces and ice will make driving conditions treacherous, and running water will make salting less effective.

“We’re still advising caution, and reminding drivers not to drive into flood water; drive with caution; try to avoid driving after dark; and to stay up to date with weather and flood related news from the Environment Agency and Met Office.”

Flooding was reported over the weekend in Umberleigh and Weare Giffard, and there’s surface water on many roads in the area.

A flood warning is still in place for the lower River Torridge from Dolton to Bideford including New Bridge, Beaford Bridge, Taddiport, Rolle Bridge, Weare Giffard, Annery Kiln, and the A386, A3124 and B3227 at Great Torrington and Taddiport.

Lower level flood alerts are also covering the lower River Taw from Newnham Bridge to Barnstaple; the Rivers Caen, Bradiford Water and Yeo and coastal streams from Braunton to Combe Martin and the upper Torridge area including Black Torrington, Milton Damerel and Hatherleigh areas, and coastal streams in the Hartland and Clovelly areas.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue report the service received calls to 550 incidents during 24 hours on Saturday, and attended 51 incidents involving vehicles stuck in floodwater.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “Heavy showers are expected to affect the area during Monday. Given the saturated nature of ground, the public should be aware of the possibility of further flooding and disruption to travel.”

  • On the plus side there could be some great open air skating over the next week provided of course you skate in the fields :-)
