From jousting to falconry, Bideford stepped back in time on Saturday to celebrate Heritage Day.

THOUSANDS of people stepped back in time in Bideford on Saturday to celebrate the town’s annual heritage day.

From jousting to falconry, visitors were entertained by historical goings-on in Victoria Park throughout the day.

David Howell, of organisers Bideford 500, said they estimated there were around 4,000 people in the town on the day.

“It was absolutely fabulous, a really fantastic day and we were very lucky with the weather,” he said.

“We were supposed to start clearing up at 4pm but at 4.45pm we still had people queuing up to see the attractions.

“We are very pleased with how it went and are now starting to look at next year.”

The celebrations began as Mayor Mervyn Langmead led a parade from the town hall to the park to officially open the day.

North Devon Falconry put on several displays, followed by demonstrations of medieval combat by the Devon Medieval Combat Alliance.

The Kenwith Company of Archers let visitors have a go at the ancient sport, and youngsters were wowed by a field ‘hospital’ led by Trepanning Through History.

As well as jousting, craft making and guided heritage trails, the Businesses of Bideford pulled together to bring the town to life with history.

There were medieval banquets, shoe shining, historical displays, VE Day tea parties and even a chance to go in the stocks.

“We just want to thank everyone who came along and supported us,” added Mr Howell.
