Rockham Bay could become inaccessible if there is further deterioration of the cliffs, said National Trust ranger.

A LANDSLIDE at Rockham Bay has left the beach closed off for fears of further slips.

Jonathan Fairhurst, Woolacombe’s National Trust ranger, said the cliff deterioration had occurred some time in the last week.

The beach, near Mortehoe, is accessed by a set of steps on the cliff face which has had to be closed off until it is believed to be safe again.

“Rockham is a very unstable bit of the coast line and there have always been cliff falls here,” he said.

“The steps have fallen away in the past and we’ve had a few slips in the past ten years or so.

“There are some cracks appearing in the steps at the moment, but it could go tomorrow or it could last twenty years.

“When it eventually does subside, it’s going to become very difficult to use the beach.”

The National Trust is currently in the process of applying for a temporary closure to Devon County Council as it is a public right of way.
