Bideford 500 rolled out the red carpet on Friday evening to annouce the winners of the GRAfta Awards.
MORE than 800 schoolchildren took part in this year’s Grenville Renown Awards for Torridge Area (GRAFTA) awards as part of Bideford’s heritage celebrations.
The GRAFTAS organised by Bideford 500 and on Friday evening the red carpet was rolled out at the Pier House to announce the winners.
Schoolchildren are asked to create a piece of art inspired by local history, with disciplines ranging from visual art and technology to literature and performance.
Organiser Carolyn Hinton said she was ‘completely overwhelmed’ by the amount of entries and the high standard of the work.
“The standards were just exceptional, and the professional judges were so impressed by the level of some of the work,” she said.
“Last year we had more than 600 entries and this year we had around 820.
“It started out as an acorn, but now it is a mighty oak tree and next year we will be having a full production team.”
