FIRE crews were called to three gorse fires in the space of a few hours yesterday evening (Thurs) in Torrington, Lynton and Hartland.

The first incident, on Torrington Common, occurred at around 5pm and one fire engine from Torrington was called to the scene.

The crew found approximately 100m by 50m of gorse and ablaze and used a hose reel jet and beaters to extinguish the flames.

The cause of the fire is believed to have been deliberate.

Just before 10pm, a call came in to report a fire on gorse land measuring approximately 50m adjacent to the B3223 at Scobhill Gate, Lynton.

Crews from Lynton used two hose reel jets and 10 beaters to control the fire, which is also believed to have been deliberately started.

Three fire engines were called to reports of a third gorse fire at around 11.20pm at Bursdon Moor in Hartland along the A39.

Crews from Bideford and Hartland found a large area of gorse, measuring approximately 30 hectares on fire.

Fire fighters used three hose reel jets and beaters to extinguish the fire, and brendon pumps from Nether Stowey and Porlock were also called to the scene.

Due to the flames being fanned by strong winds, fire crews remained at this incident until daylight hours to ensure it was fully extinguished and to ensure the heath fire did not spread any further.

The crews from Bideford and Hartland were relieved from the incident at 4am by crews from Hatherleigh, Holsworthy and Appledore.

Nick Williams, from Appledore, was one of the firefighters to take over in the early hours of the morning.

He said: “We managed to get the fire down before the sun came up.

“The fire was burning right up against the main road and there was a danger it would jump it and head towards the properties across the road.

“We don’t yet know what the cause of the fire was.”

The cause of the fire was believed to be accidental.
