POLICE have released CCTV images of a man they want to speak to in connection with a knifepoint robbery in South Molton.

An 18-year-old woman was robbed in Lloyds TSB in East Street at around 8.52pm on Friday, January 17.

She was standing in the foyer of the bank about to withdraw cash from the cash machine when an unknown man approached her.

The man was holding a knife and demanded she withdrew £100. She complied with his demands and drew out the cash and gave it to him.

He then asked her to wait in the foyer for two minutes before leaving and he then made off with the cash.

Police are now looking to track down the man, who was described as white, in his early 20s, 6ft tall, of scrawny build with dark brown hair, dark eyes and dark eyebrows.

He was wearing a black raincoat with the hood up which had a distinctive thin white strip running horizontally across the top of the shoulders.

He was also wearing a black scarf that covered his nose and mouth, with a thin red line running horizontally across it.

The knife is described as a black plastic-handled kitchen knife with a 6 inch blade, which was serrated all the way down with a straight flat back.

DC Daryl Marvelly, Barnstaple CID, said: “Although the victim was unharmed, she was clearly shaken up by this distressing incident.

“We would like to speak to anyone who may know the man shown in the images or may have witnessed the incident.”

North Devon Inspector Roger Bartlett added: “This is a very nasty offence and distressing for the young victim and we are absolutely determined to find out who is responsible and bring them to justice.

“I am sure that there are people in this community who know who this offender is.

“My plea is that they tell us because offences like this not only cause distress to the victim, but create a great deal of fear within the community.

“I cannot believe any local resident wants South Molton to be like that.

“This person does not deserve to be protected.

“His actions affect us all and so will yours if you have information that you choose not to share.

“Even if the information is provided anonymously through Crimestoppers, we need to have it.”

Police will be increasing their patrols in the South Molton town centre area to provide reassurance to the public.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact police on 101 quoting crime CS/14/26, or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
