The Agricultural Inn stole the crown from three-year champions The Black Horse in annual Boxing Day tug o’ war in Braunton.
THE annual Boxing Day tug o’ war in Braunton drew the crowds again this year despite flooding in the village just days earlier.
Hundreds of people turned out to see the event in Church Street, which has been running since the 1960s.
The Agricultural Inn team met on the Black Horse team’s home turf, greeted by hundreds of eager supporters.
Originally the tug was between the Black Horse and the former New Inn, but the Aggi stepped up when the latter closed down some years ago.
With their title to defend, the Black Horse pulled with their might but it wasn’t enough to hold off the five-stone heavier Aggi team.
The Aggi won two of the three tugs, claiming the crown their rivals have held for the last three years.
Julian Turner, of the Aggi, said: “It’s the biggest rivalry in the village; everything we do from pool to darts becomes a competition, but this is the big one.
“It’s great to have taken the crown for the first time in three years.”
The tug is thought to have raised £350 which will be split between Braunton charities.
“It was a great turnout considering the flooding; I think we probably had about 500 people down there,” added Julian.
The men’s pull was followed by a ladies’ and children’s pull, and those watching also enjoyed a hog roast.
