POLICE are warning beach goers to be aware of unexploded mortars unearthed by the stormy weather after one was discovered at Crow Point yesterday (Sun).

A walker called 999 after finding the ammunition in the sand and police cordoned off the area at around 2.30pm.

Coastguard and a bomb disposal squad were at the scene until around 7.30pm but are due to return again this morning (Mon) as the area was cut off by the tide.

PCSO Hannah Denton said the bottle-shaped item was an illumination mortar and contained dangerous, unstable phosphorus.

She said: “It’s not just the fact it’s unexploded – these can contain dangerous chemicals too.”

Sgt Lee Henderson added: “The ferocious seas and weather are thought to be responsible for uncovering or washing up these shells and there is clearly the potential for further bad weather to unearth more.

“We are asking members of the public when out walking to be mindful that these devices are potentially still very dangerous and not to approach or touch them but to call police immediately on 999.”

The device was removed the Royal Navy bomb disposal squad this morning.
