HUNDREDS of people attended Torridge District Council’s flag raising ceremony in Victoria Park, Bideford, yesterday (Monday) as part of Armed Forces Week.

The event, jointly staged by Torridge and Bideford Town Council, attracted a number of local organisations and veterans who joined in the parade along Bideford Quay.

The Tarka Pipe Band led the procession, which included the Royal British Legion, the Sea Cadets, Army Cadets, Brownies and members of the Royal Marine Association as well as Bideford Town Band.

Veteran Clifford Coates read an extract from ‘For the Fallen’ by Laurence Binyonto to the assembled crowd before the Military Wives Choir performed.

Councillor Peter Christie, chairman of Torridge, said: “Armed Forces Week gives the nation as a whole the opportunity to show its support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community, from currently serving troops to service families and from veterans to cadets.

“Conflict is never far away, and those involved now, in the past or who will be in the future, and their families, are in our thoughts and our hearts.”

The Armed Forces Day flag will be flying all week.
