Updated: Fire crews were scrambled to the scene in the early hours of this morning after receiving several 999 calls.
THE police and fire service are investigating after a large fire involving cattle sheds at Hatherleigh Market in the early hours of this morning (Mon).
A police spokesman said officers were still at the scene but were ‘keeping an open mind’ as to the cause.
Six fire engines and an aerial platform ladder were scrambled to the scene at around 3.40am after receiving several 999 calls.
The range of single storey buildings at the Cattle Market were well alight and crews used breathing apparatus wearers and hose reel jets to combat the flames.
Fire fighters managed to use a river nearby as a water supply and by 4.25am were making good progress.
By 5am, the fire was contained to one corner of the building, and Western Power attended to disconnect the electricity supply.
After two hours at the scene, the fire was extinguished by crews. Around eight per cent of a block of single officers was severely damaged.
Anyone with any information can call police on non-emergency 101 quoting log 80 of October 21, 2013.
