MUSKETS, barber surgeons and public executions – it could only be Barnstaple Heritage Centre’s Civil War re-enactment.

Saturday saw around 80 members of the Sealed Knot descend on the town to play out scenes from the English Civil War – including the ‘execution’ of town clerk Will Austin for showing his support for the Royalists!

The event, returning to the Barnstaple for a third year, proved hugely popular, with enthralling set-pieces being flanked by living history tents which exhibited weaponry and armour from the 17th century.

There was also the chance to learn about loom weaving and barber surgeons outside the Heritage Centre throughout Saturday.

Mr Austin said: “I was somewhat nervous about being executed but thankfully I was able to rise from the dead!

“Thanks to all involved. We’re very pleased with another successful event organised by the town council and the Sealed Knot society.”
