Students across North Devon are celebrating another excellent set of GCSE results, with several schools around the region bettering national averages.

A number of schools reported an improvement on last year’s results, despite sweeping changes to the GCSE system this year, including South Molton Community College, Braunton Academy and Chulmleigh Community College.

There wee happy faces at South Molton, where 100 per cent of students gained five A*-G grades, and 60 per cent passed five at A*-C including English and Maths.

Outgoing principle Jenny Glover said: “These are very good rates of attainment, especially in this year of examination reform, which is due to the commitment and hard work of staff, pupils and the support of their parents and carers.”

Park Community School in Barnstaple saw their top 25 academic high-flyers pick up 241 A*/A grades between them - almost 10 each – while close to 92 per cent of all exams were passed at A*-C at West Buckland.

Some 43.9 per cent of exams were awarded A*/A grades, with Beth Keech attaining a remarkable 10 straight A*s.

Beth said: “I’m delighted with my grades and I’m looking forward to the rest of the holidays before starting A-levels.”

At Braunton, there was a best-ever pass rate of almost 80 per cent at A*-C.

Andy Pearce, acting principal, said: “Results day is one of the highlights of the school calendar where all members of the school community can celebrate the progress that students have made while at the Academy.”

And it was a happy day at Bideford’s Kingsley School, where nerves turned into hugs and tears of joy as 82 per cent secured A*-C grades.

Chulmleigh managed the same pass rate, and staff at Ilfracombe Academy are also delighted, with headteacher Sharon Marshall saying the results reflected the commitment shown by students and staff.

English and core subjects performed well, with 58 per cent of students getting A-C in English and maths, while English language broke its record for the second year running, at 77 per cent.

At Bideford College, English Literature, Maths and Science grades all improved by over 10 per cent on last year as results took a turn for the better across the board.

And there were best-ever results for Pilton College, where English Language results soared despite a national decline in the subject.

Tabitha Wilkinson was their top performer, bagging 12 A*s and an A-level in Maths.
