PETROC has secured planning permission for a brand new £10.8million redevelopment at its site in Barnstaple.

The funding for the new engineering facility and a lifestyle and tourism centre was secured in November as part of the College Capital Investment Fund (CCIF).

The development will include a new building for engineering and manufacturing with the latest technologies including CAD facilities, 3D printing and CNC machining.

The lifestyle and tourism centre will house state-of-the-art walk-in public salons and a glass fronted restaurant, as well as teaching spaces.

It is hoped the new development will help to improve relationships with employers.

Will Bowden, of Appledore Shipyard owners Babcok International Group, said the engineering project was ‘exciting’ for the area.

“The new facilities at Petroc will ensure that our continuing relationship with the college delivers the skills and competencies we require for the future,” he said.

Mark Dodson, from the Michelin-starred Masons Arms, added: “This brand new, vibrant facility will give students a fantastic start.

“I’m really looking forward to getting involved with the project and, in the future, delivering talks and demonstrations in the new restaurant and kitchens.”

Earlier today the Gazette revealed how staff at the college were currently being asked to undertake voluntary redundancy.

Work has already begun on the old building at the site and will be completed by September 2015.
