A MIDWIFE at North Devon District Hospital who stood with her patient even after she had finished her shift has been nominated for a Healthcare Hero Award.

Jessica Berry lost her baby boy at 23 weeks gestation and said she will ‘never forget’ the kindness of her midwife Julie Haydn-Higgins.

“We first met when I went in to take some medication to start the process of labour which was obviously a very hard and traumatic time for me and my partner,” said Jessica.

“When I was induced I went into labour quickly and Julie was not on shift, but she came in anyway.

“She wasn’t allowed to assist in the delivery as she had already worked too many hours but she stood by my bed and held my hand. She didn’t have to do that, but she did.

“I felt she was there because she wanted to be, because she cared – not just doing her job.

“Without her I think our terrible time would have been so much harder. I just want to thank her and for her to know what an amazing lady she is.”

Midwife Dawn Henry has also been nominated for an award by Kayleigh Maurice, who gave birth to a baby boy in the hospital in July.

“Some may say she was ‘just doing her job’, but for a first-time mum the prospect of giving birth was a terrifying experience to me,” she said.

“She kept me calm and in control at all times.

“She brought my baby boy into the world, and for ‘doing her job’ I really must say a great big thank you.”

The awards, run by the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust in association with the Gazette, recognise the unsung heroes who stand out from the crowd.

And two people we featured in the Gazette a fortnight ago have also had a flurry of nominations.

Jo Gordon, a gynae oncology clinical nurse specialist at NDDH has now had five nominations, and Martin Padmore, a healthcare assistant, has had another two.
