Mini-computers put school ‘to the forefront’ of programming

Students at The Park Community School have received a number of free Raspberry Pi computers from the joint project led by Google and the OCR Exam Board to help with their studies.

The Raspberry Pi is a small credit card sized computer that has been developed by a British manufacturer in order to revitalise programming in the UK.

The computer is a low cost (£25) circuit board that allows students to download an operating system and learn to code with programs called ‘Scratch’ and ‘Python’.

Computer courses in schools are changing from traditonal ‘ICT’ to learning how to actually programme it to do the things that you want it to.

“This moves us to the forefront of the latest development,” said headteacher David Atton. “Addressing those aspects now viewed as so important for today’s young people seeking the full range of opportunities in the modern world.”
