Updated: Town Council to fund £2,000 referendum in the town over hopsital inpatient bed closures.

TORRINGTON Town Council has agreed to fund a parish poll in response to the closure of the inpatient beds in the community hospital.

The proposal was put forward by the Save Torrington’s Irreplaceable Torrington Cottage Hospital (STITCH) group.

Margaret Brown, chairman of STITCH, said the town council would fund the £2,000 parish poll which will take place on Wednesday, April 9.

“The cost works out at less than a loaf of bread per household, which considering the importance of keeping the beds open is not a lot,” she said.

“There will be no postal votes, people will just turn up on the day and vote.

“We hope hundreds of people will come out support their hospital because it is vital that those beds are opened permanently.”

The poll will take place between 4pm and 9pm at Great Torrington School and Torrington Methodist Church.

STITCH members will be on hand on the day of the poll to provide lifts to those who would struggle to make it to the polling station.

The date of the poll is still to be determined and will be announced shortly.
