Open space plans for East-the-Water Wharves put on hold

Bideford Town Council will hear a response from Torridge District Council after proposing their vision for the East-the-Water Wharves site.

A TOWN council’s plans to turn the East-the-Water wharves site into a public open space have been dashed by Torridge District Council.

The idea was proposed at last month’s Bideford Town Council meeting that the council write to Torridge to express an interest in acquiring the site.

At the time, town councillors put forward the motion, saying ‘luxury apartments’ were not what the people of Bideford wanted.

But Jenny Wallace, Torridge’s head of paid services, wrote to the council saying they would not be entering a discussion at this stage.

The letter said: “As the town council is aware, and as agreed at Torridge’s community and resources committee in October 2012, we are negotiating contract terms with our preferred developer.

“It would, therefore, be inappropriate at this stage to enter into negotiations with the town council.”

The district council received six expressions of interest on the site when it was first put out to tender, of which it shortlisted four developers, asking for more detailed proposals.

Two of these then withdrew and the council selected its preferred developer from the two remaining ones.

Mrs Wallace added: “The district council has progressed legal negotiations with the preferred developer to a stage where a further report is required for the community and resources committee to make a decision on the future development of the site.”

It is estimated that a decision will be made at the next committee meeting in May.

Town councillors are expected to debate the response tomorrow night (Thursday).
