A TEAM of young racers are appealing for Scalextric track pieces to help drive their race car creations to victory.

The Bideford College students will be designing and building Scalextric cars as part of their extra curricular STEM project, which encourages links between science, technology, engineering and maths.

The Jack Barclay Racing project is in its second year at the college, and is supported by the Jack Barclay Bentley dealership in Mayfair.

The project, which currently involves around 20 pupils, will be gearing the team up to enter the national Scalextric 4 Schools competition, building a car for a track race and another to break the ‘land-speed’ record.

Nic Hedges, design technology teacher at Bideford College said: “The staff at Jack Barclay are absolutely fantastic and incredibly supportive of this school-based engineering and design project.

“Through them we are able to finance the majority of the project as most of the budget goes towards the minibus & fuel to the final in Shropshire on June 24.”

Last year’s team set the joint fastest lap time and came third in the competition, but this year the students will be going for gold.

Nic said: “What we really need is extra track. Mainly the straight bits to be honest, because we’re going to need to build a section of track that stretches the entire length of the Technology corridor.

“If people have any unwanted cars that could be used for research and testing then they are always welcome too.”

Anyone interested in donating any bits of track or spare cars can contact Bideford College on 01237 477611 or drop any donations at reception marked FAO N. Hedges.
