BRAUNTON School has been awarded a grant of £7,585 to help other schools in the area get involved with the London 2012 Olympic Games.

It will enable the school to make the most of opportunities available through the official London 2012 education programme Get Set, supporting a wide range of Olympic events involving all the primary schools in Braunton learning community.

Braunton will also be working on projects that include its international partner schools in Austria, Norway, France and Martinique.

More than 500 schools applied for grants and principal David Sharratt said they were thrilled to be one of 50 schools in the UK to be chosen and one of only six in the South West region.

He paid tribute to school sports co-ordinator ---------- Sayer, who was the architect of a successful bid, supported by the Braunton PE team.

“I was privileged to spend a day at the rapidly developing Olympics site in East London very recently to join up with the other representatives of the 50 winning schools,” he said.

“We were able to share ideas with each other and to see all the opportunities for young people that the 2012 Olympics will bring and the legacy that will follow.

“It is wonderful the young people of Braunton School and the learning community will be able to play a significant part. Miss Sayer has done a great job to put us on the Olympian sporting map.”
