Up to 100 sofas and other items have been tipped down a gully known as Breakneck Hole, off the B3358 near Challacombe.

AN investigation has been launched after up to 100 old sofas were dumped in a North Devon beauty spot.

Furniture and other items were discovered tipped down a gully known as Breakneck Hole, off the B3358 near Challacombe.

North Devon Council is now looking into where the furniture has come from and who owns the land.

Environmental warden Bill Hucker said the council was first alerted to the fly-tipping on New Year’s Eve but the remote location and recent bad weather had hampered the investigation.

He said: “We’re hoping someone may recognise their old sofa among the photos we have, which could help us identify those responsible for the fly-tipping.”

Executive member for environment, Councillor Rodney Cann, added: “The sheer amount of fly-tipping is appalling. This is a beautiful part of the world, which makes this environmental crime particularly sad.

“If anyone knows anything about this horrendous crime, please let us know.”

Anyone who recognises any of the sofas or has any information about the fly-tipping is asked to call the council on 01271 374776 or email customerservices@northdevon.gov.uk.
