Town council appoints two of its long serving former councillors as honorary aldermen.

NORTHAM Town Council has honoured two well known and respected former mayors by making them honorary aldermen.

In recognition of the hard work and many years of service by Keith Evers and Richard Bradford MBE, the council has for the first time used its right to grant them the title.

Both held the position of leading councillor three times between 1970 and 2000, Mr Evers first as chairman of the old Northam Urban District Council from 1971-72, then serving as mayor on the town council in 1982-83 and 1990-91.

On Thursday he was presented with his accolade at a special ceremony attended by councillors, friends and family.

Mr Bradford will received his tomorrow (Thursday) in a similar ceremony at Northam Council Offices at 11.30am. He held the role of mayor between 1980-81, 1992-93 and from 1999-2000.

At Thursday’s presentation, Councillor Andrew Eastman said it was an honour and a privilege for him to be there and a historic day for the town council as it exercised its right to appoint honorary aldermen for the first time.

The Mayor, Cllr Jane Whittaker, added: “I think we are delighted to bestow this upon Keith. It is something quite significant, but only people who have contributed significantly to this council are honoured in this way,”

Mr Evers, 96, first joined the urban district council in 1964 and was as leading member of the community for decades. He was the founder member of Northam Twinning Association.

The former army officer met his late wife Joan while still in the army and they had four children, of whom Keith’s son Ralph and twin daughters Marian and Gwyneth were at the presentation ceremony. His other son Stephen lives in South Africa.

After receiving his accolade, Mr Evers said: “It came out of the blue, I didn’t know anything about it – in fact I had never known there was such a thing.

“It is a tremendous honour, although I have not really done very much myself, I don’t think.”
