LIFEBOAT volunteers from Appledore and Ilfracombe have spent two days at the charity’s Saltash support base learning about short-range search and rescue communications.

They were joined on the specialist course by crew members from Padstow and Sennen Cove to study the art of clear communication during a major incident at sea.

The eight on the course, led by RNLI instructor Steve Howard, have been learning about relevant techniques and how to use the equipment needed.

“Crew volunteers need to have a good working knowledge of the equipment and practises involved in distress communication,” said Steve.

“All those attending have used state-of-the-art communication simulators with touch screen technology to help rehearse the procedures required during a rescue scenario.

“They have all done very well and have received an RYA Short Range Course International Certificate of Competence and the RNLI’s Search and Rescue Radio Operators Certificate.”
