North Devon pubs toast CAMRA success

Local real ale makes its mark in UK beer ‘bible’.

NORTH Devon pubs and real ale breweries are toasting their inclusion in this year’s Good Beer Guide.

Seventeen local pubs and seven independent breweries have made the cut in the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) guide, the bible of the UK pub industry.

The 41st edition of the popular book features more than 4,500 of the UK’s best inns and comes complete with tasting notes on more than 1,000 independently brewed beers.

Barnstaple’s Reform Inn and Barum Brewery, both in Pilton, were among the North Devon pubs and breweries to get a mention.

Reform Inn landlady Esther Davies said the pub was a regular feature in the guide and that real ale was the pub’s biggest seller.

“We get a lot of tourists visit who have looked us up in the guide,” she said.

Barnstaple Wetherspoon pub The Panniers also features. Pub’s manager Alan Young said: “We offer our customers an excellent range of real ales at all times, including those from regional brewers and microbrewers, as well as hosting our own beer festivals.

“Staff at the pub work hard to ensure that the real ales on offer are kept in first-class condition at all times and the pub’s inclusion in the guide highlights this.”

Local CAMRA branch members chose the pubs following regular visits to check on the quality of the real ales on offer.

They also took into account customer service, décor and overall atmosphere.

A CAMRA spokesman said: “It is our belief that if a licensee serves an excellent pint of real ale, then everything else in the pub, including customer service, quality of food and atmosphere, are likely to be of an equally high standard.”

Other North Devon pub entries are: the Swan (Bampton); Torridge Inn (Black Torrington); Bell Inn (Chittlehampton); Old Court House (Chulmleigh); Black Horse Inn (Great Torrington); Tally Ho! (Hatherleigh); Hunters Inn (Heddon Valley); Old Market Inn (Holsworthy); George and Dragon (Ilfracombe); Ship and Pilot (Ilfracombe); Grove Inn (Kings Nympton); Bell Inn (Parkham); Devil’s Stone Inn (Shebbear); Town Arms Hotel (South Molton); and Old Smithy Inn (Welcombe).

The other local independent brewers were: Clearwater (Torrington); Country Life (Abbotsham); Forge (Hartland); Jollyboat (Bideford); Holsworthy (Clawton); and Wizard (Ilfracombe).
