National award and on the shelves at Harrods.
A NORTH Devon firm has won a national award for its blood orange marmalade.
Cranfields Foods, of East Down near Barnstaple, won a Gold 3 Star Award at the Great Taste Awards, dubbed the ‘Oscars’ of the food world.
The marmalade was one of the top 50 products at the London ceremony, earning Cranfields a listing with Harrods for three marmalades and preserves.
The judges said: “Great balance of sweet and bitter notes, intense orange flavour and deep, rich colour. A good set and dense texture, but a very pleasant mouthfeel.”
Owner Victoria Cranfield, said: “The blood oranges this year were truly bloody and less sweet than in previous years, perfect for marmalade. We are so pleased the judges were impressed with the outcome.
“In total we gained five Gold Awards this year, more than in any previous year so we are chuffed to bits.”
“There is a perception that marmalade sales have been losing ground, but this is not the case for artisan marmalades made from fresh fruit which have real flavour and bite.
“Our marmalades are becoming a greater proportion of our sales year on year so it is good to get the accolades to fuel the continuous chopping of fruit!”
