NORTH Devon is ‘open for business’ despite recent stormy weather, according to the District Council’s Executive member for economic regeneration.

“Promoting the economy is one of our top priorities,” said Cllr Malcolm Prowse. “The percentage cuts to tourism and North Devon+ are still less than those from central government – along with Torridge (District Council) nearly £300,000 will go into North Devon+.

“The local enterprise partnership is working to show people that we are open for business. It’s about reassuring people and telling them that you can still get here.”

NDC’s economic development manager, Ellen Vernon, believes there needs to be a broader message coming out of the South West following widespread flooding in the early weeks of this year.

“We don’t have the scale of flooding that the Somerset levels have had, so you can get here,” she said.

“We’ve had damage but it’s not effecting businesses directly.

“We’re launching our economic strategy this week with a breakfast event for local businesses and we know people are keen to come along.

“Northern Devon’s priorities have to be centred around rail links, road link and coastal infrastructure.”
