Open event held today (Wednesday) for people to see new plans for The Long House in Holsworthy.

How The Long House will look. How The Long House will look.

THE North Devon Hospice will be unveiling plans for a brand new building in Holsworthy today (Wednesday).

The Long House will be situated next to Holsworthy Medical Centre and will provide extra support to families facing the challenges of cancer and life-limiting illnesses.

At the event this afternoon, the public will be able to see plans and designs for the bespoke building designed to create a calm and welcoming environment.

Stephen Roberts, chief executive of North Devon Hospice, said: “A great deal of work has gone into getting us to this point, and we’ve been really excited to tell people about this project.

“A comment we often hear when people visit North Devon Hospice for the first time, is that it’s like walking into a big hug, because it feels so supportive and safe.

“That is what we want to achieve with The Long House and it has been fantastic working with NPS to come up with building designs to make that possible.

“A great deal of thought has gone into every facet of the design, with the needs of the patient and their family always at the forefront.

“There will be spaces for one-to-one counselling, support groups, complementary therapies, outpatient clinics and much more.”

The Hospice is now trying to rally the support of the local community by setting up The Long House Appeal.

On April 30, people can come along to Holsworthy Memorial Hall and find out how they can show their support.

Mr Roberts added: “There are a number of ways in which you can contribute towards the project, including fundraising or volunteering, and I hope to see plenty of people there.

“The early reaction to this project has been overwhelmingly positive, so we are sure that people in western Devon will get behind it.”

For more information on The Long House Appeal visit Holsworthy Memorial Hall between 10am and midday on April 30 or call Ali Hunt on 01271 347206.
