A planning application has been submitted for North Devon’s new cancer and wellbeing centre.
Hospital charity Over and Above has put in proposals for the building at North Devon District Hospital (NDDH), now it has raised a third of its build costs.
It is hoped once permission is granted construction of the centre could begin late this year or early next year.
There will also be informal seating areas for visitors, therapy rooms, advice on everything from treatment to finances, and a landscaped, outdoor area too.
Ian Roome, head of fundraising and volunteering, said: “We’re excited because we’re a step closer to helping people on their cancer pathways, from when they are first diagnosed, to living beyond cancer.
“We’re looking forward to being able to offer different therapies, advice and information for patients as well as relatives.
“This is what our patients and their families have told us that they want. Our ambition is to provide this facility to meet the needs of our patients currently going through treatment, as well as those that have had treatment say, five, six, or seven years ago.
“There is still a long way to go to reach the £1.5million but we are so grateful to the people of North Devon who have supported us so far.”
Jasmin Liddel, from David Wilson Wilson Partnership architects, who designed the new centre, said: “The building will wrap around and enclose a protected courtyard, with the existing treeline as a backdrop and boundary.
“It will be a quiet and private space in a very busy hospital site.
“The design of the building aims to let light into the centre of the building and create a similar open and airy environment as the Seamoor Unit.”
Director David Wilson added: “The interior environment will aim to be domestic and friendly rather than clinical, with warm colours and natural materials.
“We will be working hard to ensure that the Cancer and Wellbeing Centre is a special place and a building of quality, and a building for North Devon to be proud of.”
