The Be Our Guest competition run by Parkwood Theatres and the North Devon Gazette has been a huge success

The amazing prize for our recent theatres competition left the winner almost speechless when she found out.

Jean Watkins from Ilfracombe was over the moon when she learned she had won the opportunity to see a show of her choice every week at the Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple between September and Christmas.

There was a fantastic response to the Be Our Guest competition in conjunction with Parkwood Theatres, with more than 1,000 applying online for the prize of a weekly pair of tickets, with Jean randomly chosen after correctly naming ‘Bobby Crush’ as her answer.

Jean, who works for North Devon Council, said: “I was genuinely absolutely delighted, because it’s just such an opportunity to see a whole range of shows I would not normally go and see.

“This is one of my top passions, I absolutely love going to the theatre and I used to go to the old Queen’s Hall and the Victoria Pavilion in Ilfracombe.”

There are some absolute corkers lined up in the autumn programme put together by temporary operator Parkwood, including the Bill Kenwright West End smash hit Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, with Joe McElderry as Joseph.

Music fans can enjoy some top names too, including soul legend Alexander O’Neal on November 15, plus The Stylistics and Justin Hayward of The Moody Blues, as well as some top tribute acts from Buddy to Bowie.

December sees the in-house pantomime Beauty and the Beast arrive, packed with talent.

Jean said: “It looks like a brilliant programme, so well done to Parkwood. If I possibly can, I will try and go every week, and hopefully share it with friends and family.

“A big one is going to be Joseph and I think that’s so exciting and it’s quite a coup, having something that prestigious here.”

Theatres manager Mark Farley added: “I think it’s brilliant how many people responded and it shows the interest in the theatres.

“I am just so pleased it’s gone to someone who obviously has such a passion for the theatre and will enjoy the prize.”
