Organisers forced to scale back New Year Eve plans due to lack of resources.
BARNSTAPLE will herald the start of 2014 with a fireworks display over the River Taw – but no party in the Square.
Organisers say a lack of resources and funding has meant there will be no music stage on the Square this year – despite the event attracting huge numbers in previous years.
Ian Roome, chairman of the Barnstaple New Year’s Eve Charity Events Committee, said: “Unfortunately we have had to cut it back this year due to a lack of funding and resources but we will still be putting on fireworks from the old Leaderflush Shapland site.
“We have been able to put on a number of successful New Year events in recent years to rival Bideford but with a committee of just four volunteers, it has been particularly hard-going this year.
“We are thankful for the support of Barnstaple Town Council and many other organisations in the town have given us the financial backing to put on the fireworks display – I hope it is just as well supported by people as it has been in previous years.”
A road closure on the Longbridge and in the Square will be in place from 11.30pm-12.30am.
