‘No sanity’ after plans for 80 homes plan approved for Pilton

North Devon Council planners give the green light for controversial proposals.

CONTROVERSIAL plans for 80 news homes at a green field site next to Barnstaple hospital have been given the go ahead by councillors today (Wednesday).

This morning’s meeting of the planning committee saw a vote for conditional approval of outline plans for the Trayne Farm site on the hill overlooking the North Devon District Hospital junction.

At a meeting last month it had been agreed to defer any decision on the site at off Roborough Road until plans for a £1million roundabout at the junction were finalised.

The application from Gleeson Developments Ltd intends to create 80 homes plus gardens, parking, services, infrastructure and public open space on the field site, which is currently used for grazing.

The council has received 123 letters of objection and representation regarding the scheme, many claiming inadequate consultation by developers, as well as fears the hospital junction will not be able to cope with the extra traffic, plus flooding concerns and issues with overlooking and loss of privacy.

Pilton West and Shirwell parish councils both recommended refusal, as did Barnstaple Town Council.

North Devon Councillor Rodney Cann has just tweeted from the planning meeting: “Trayne Hill application is conditionally approved. Is there no hope that sanity will win the day for this lovely hillside site?”

Today’s decision is for outline permission - no work will begin until planners have approved a full, detailed application.

Other developments which have been proposed for the Pilton area include up to 115 houses on land off Northfield Lane, across the road from North Devon District Hospital, plus 43 new homes on adjacent land at Westaway Plain.

  • It might be that the fault lies with NDC themselves. Ask your councillors where is their current 5 Year Housing Land Supply statement. Without it in place NDC will always struggle to object.
