Two North Devon villages will be presented with lifesaving defibrillators on Friday.

BRAUNTON and Croyde residents will have the chance to save lives with the delivery of two defibrillators.

Braunton Caen Rotary Club in partnership with the British Heart Foundation (BHF) has raised funds for the equipment which will be based at John Wensleys Newsagents in Braunton and RUDA Holiday Park in Croyde.

The devices can be used to deliver an electric shock to victims of cardiac arrest.

The money for the equipment was raised through the Santa Sleigh run through Braunton last Christmas and a Rotary wishing well at RUDA.

John Rendle, chairman of the Caen Rotary Community Committee, said: “This equipment will be available for public use and the beauty of it is that no training is necessary, just open the box and step by step instructions are there.

“It is intended to be an ongoing project and we would like to see more of these machines in Braunton in the near future.

“Even if one life is saved it will be worth the investment.”

In the UK 30,000 people are treated by emergency services each year for cardiac arrests.

Alan Cunnington, past president of the rotary club and former heart consultant said: “Survival depends on speed of treatment; with the defibrillators immediately available to the general public lives could be saved.”

BHF funded half of the £850 cost for each machine, and formal handover will take place on Friday at John Wensleys Newsagents at 2pm and RUDA at 3pm.
