The centre will offer a range of facilities from hydrotherapy and massage to gym equipment and a nutrition bar.

A NEW gym and wellbeing centre will be opening in Braunton this month offering a range of services from hydrotherapy and a hot tub to dance classes and self defence.

Braunton Fitness & Wellbeing will focus on functional fitness for everyone as well as offering a range of classes and equipment unique to the area.

The project has had hundreds-of-thousands of pounds invested in it by Rupert Ellingham, who came up with idea after deciding to close his building business in Kent and move to North Devon.

Having played rugby for more than 30 years, entered bodybuilding competitions and trained in power lifting, Rupert, 41, has plenty of experience to put behind the project.

“The project has grown organically with a lot of great local people putting their skills into it,” explained Rupert.

“From a nutrition bar offering advice on healthy eating to a range of alternative therapies, we’ve got so much to offer in this space.”

The five units, situated behind Tesco, will include several studios, a crèche, a chiropractic and sports injury clinic, a nutrition bar, top of the range fitness equipment, alternative therapies, a hot tub and ice bath.

Rupert said: “As well as more traditional gym equipment we’ll have stuff like ‘The Destroyer’, which is basically a climbing frame for grown ups and will focus on working on body strength.

“We’ve got a wave-propelled resistance pool endorsed by Michael Phelps, and we’re working on becoming the training centre for the South West in antigravity yoga.

“There will be studios for people to teach Yoga and Pilates, but also for self defence lessons, street dancing, consultations and even counselling.

“I’ve gone back ten years researching the area and a need for a facility like this, and I want it to appeal to everyone.”

Rupert also hopes as the project grows it will be able to become a real centre for the community.

He said: “For example with the crèche, I want kids to look forward to coming here, and want to get a teaching assistant in who can help them with their homework while their parents are working out.

“I just wanted to do something where I’m going to have a smile on my face every time I think about it and that will be here to stay.”

An exact opening date for the centre is still to be confirmed, but it is anticipated to be open before the end of the month.
