New digital archive tells Great War stories

09:22 01 August 2014

The fallen who hailed from Clinton Estates in North and East Devon are remembered with a new online memorial.

A digital memorial has been created to remember the fallen of World War One who hailed from Clinton estates, which includes Heanton Estate at Merton.

The stories of North and East Devon men who went to fight have been retold thanks to teams of volunteers and historians plus a website provided by Lord Clinton’s Charitable Trust and Clinton Devon Estates, in association with the Fairlynch Museum, Budleigh Salterton.

They have produced www.devonremembers.co.uk – Honouring the 1914 Generation, which lists the fallen from several villages, including Merton, whose section was compiled by volunteer Philip Collins.

Also revealed to the public for the first time is the wartime diary of the Honourable John Trefusis, who was to become the youngest Brigadier General of his day in the British Army.

Known to his troops as Jack Tre, he was a younger brother of the current Lord Clinton’s grandfather and was killed by a sniper on the Western Front in October 1915, aged 37.

The website can be seen at www.devonremembers.co.uk. People can add their own stories and photographs on the site, or by emailing mail@devonremembers.co.uk.

It is part of the Devon Remembers project being co-ordinated by Devon County Council at www.devonremembers.info
