A NEW £135,000 dance studio has opened at Torridge Pool as the gym gets set for a major refurbishment.

The dance and group exercise studio took two months to complete and has a sprung floor, improved lighting, mirrored walls and ballet bars.

The gym at the site in Northam is also set to undergo a refurbishment and will be one of the first in the UK to be fitted with interactive Technogym mywellness cloud technology.

This allows users to monitor their fitness in and out of the gym and to update their programmes with staff at the centre.

There will be 29 new stations installed at the gym as well as free weights and a new stretching area. Work is set to begin on Monday and will take up to a week to complete.

Richard Bean, general manager for 1610 in Torridge, said: “The new dance studio will be a great asset and it will allow us to provide more variety of classes and services for members as well as a superb venue to enjoy.

“We are very lucky to be one of the first centres in the UK to have integrated Technogym mywellness cloud touch screen gym technology.

“The technology and the refurbishment will provide a top level gym for members and will allow those wanting to train for competition to have the best fitness information available on the market.”

Councillor Andy Boyd, Torridge District Council’s lead member for health, said: “This is a great facility for local residents and I hope the new classes being offered will attract even more people through the doors.

“These days it’s all so easy to stay home and watch the TV, or sit in front of a computer and do nothing all evening.

“With these refurbishment works now being completed, hopefully more people will take advantage of what’s on their doorstep.”
