ILFRACOMBE has two new ecclesiastical assets following the ordination of two new members of the clergy who will be serving in the town.

John Roles, a well known Ilfracombe man and former teacher at Park School in Barnstaple, was ordained as a deacon at Exeter Cathedral by the Bishop of Exeter, the Right Reverend Michael Langrish.

He will serve as curate to the Holy Trinity and St Peter’s churches in the town as part of the ‘Coast and Combe Mission Community’.

While on Saturday, Ian Snares, who has been working in the town for the past year, was ordained as a fully-fledged priest in a ceremony at St Peter’s Church by the Bishop of Crediton, the Right Reverend Bob Evens.

The service also enabled local parishioners to say thank you to Bishop Bob - who grew up in Ilfracombe - in what was almost his final official engagement before retirement.

Speaking of the town’s new clergy, Reverend Robert Harris, priest in charge of Ilfracombe, said he was delighted to welcome John back to the town as well as to continue working with Ian in his unique role as curate to both the Holy Trinity parish plus the St Philip and St James parish with the Reverend Canon Michael Rogers.

“Prior to ordination John was a very important part of our church and community and we are all looking forward to working with him during the coming years,” he said.

“Ian has been working with both churches during the past year and has been responsible for a number of exciting new initiatives.”
