New Burrows warden will help protect livestock

The new role has been created after a worrying number of attacks on livestocks by dogs on Northam Burrows.

A NEW warden has been employed on Northam Burrows after an increasing number of dog attacks on livestock.

Rachel Summers will take on the post, created as a temporary trial by Northam Town Council, to monitor the welfare of the animals.

Northam town councillor Richard Miller said Rachel has been working well liaising with the burrows rangers, police, graziers and general public.

He said: “Since taking up her position Rachel has notified the owners of several animals in need of care.

“She has also reported several incidents of dogs worrying the livestock and she has identified very worrying levels of dog mess being left on the burrows which she removes.”

Rachel said: “I think we all agree that the vast majority of people using the Burrows are responsible and love the area.

“My role is to help Northam Town Council discharge its responsibility to help manage this important environment.

“I provide a weekly report to Northam Town Council so that they can assess any problems we may have on the Burrows.”

Incidents will be logged by head burrows ranger Shawn Corin which allow discussions with police to put otherwise isolated incidents into context.

PC Dick Rowlands said: “Our partnership to protect the Burrows and its wildlife is growing stronger and we are asking once again for the public to help.

“We have had a number of successes this year and processed several people for dog related animal worrying offences.

“These have all been as a direct result of excellent witnesses, who clearly care about the animals and environment of the Burrows, phoning in with good descriptions and the number plates of offenders.

“These calls are vital and we would encourage anyone who sees dogs chasing animals on the Burrows to call us or report it to Shawn and Rachel.”

Andrew Eastman, Devon County Councillor for Northam, thanked those involved and the graziers for their continued efforts.

He said: “I fully support the excellent work that this partnership is doing to tackle this tricky and important issue.”
