New Bishop of Exeter on pilgrimage to North Devon

Bishop Robert is travelling around meeting people in the diocese before he is installed into his new position this Saturday (July 5).

The new Bishop of Exeter has continued his prayer pilgrimage of the county before taking office with a visit to North Devon.

The Right Reverend Robert Atwell will be installed as the 71st Bishop of Exeter on Saturday in Exeter Cathedral at 2pm, with all welcome.

He is spending the days before the installation getting to know the diocese, listening to people’s concerns and offering to pray for them.

Bishop Robert called in at Berrynarbor Church of England Primary School, Ilfracombe and Children’s Hospice South West at Little Bridge House in Fremington.

He also went to Combe Martin – very special to him because his parents had their honeymoon there 67 years ago.

On his journey he is praying with and for people he meets – giving them prayer cards and inviting them to the installation service.

He said his visit to the hospice was ‘profoundly moving’.

“It was a great privilege to be welcomed so generously into the hospice, and meet parents, patients and staff,” he said.

“We held prayers under the memory tree, which was festooned with bereaved parents’ memories of their children. It was very moving and a reminder that we may forget God, but he never forgets us.”

He said he remembered holidays in Ilfracombe as a child, and that going back now he found a sense of new ‘self-confidence’ in the town and praised the strong links between the church and schools.

He stayed overnight at Lee Abbey, the Christian community which hosts volunteers and visitors from all over the world, at Lynton.

This week Bishop Robert will visit East Devon, and walk some of the coastal path around Beer and Branscombe, before moving to South Devon.
