Instow woman uses her coeliac disease diagnosis to come up with 100 per cent gluten-free bakery in Bideford.

A brand new bakery and coffee shop is opening in Bideford, but with a twist – everything is 100 per cent gluten-free.

Sarah Logan, from Instow, started up The Instow Kitchen in November after becoming frustrated with the lack of good quality gluten-free goods available.

Sarah, who has coeliac disease, has to adhere to a strict gluten-free diet, including avoiding cross contamination with gluten-containing food.

The Instow Kitchen, in Bideford Pannier Market, will sell baked gluten-free goods as well as offering classes such as cake decorating and pastry making.

Sarah said: “When I was diagnosed with coeliac disease in 2001 there was nothing gluten-free around; no labels on food; it was a nightmare.

“I didn’t even know what coeliac was and I couldn’t cook.

“I had to learn to cook gluten-free cakes, pastries and biscuits so I could still enjoy them.”

Sarah started to bake goods from home and sell them to local businesses and at markets, and when the opportunity for a shop came up, she jumped at it.

“I want people with coeliac or on a gluten-free diet to walk in and feel ‘normal’,” she added.

The Instow Kitchen is set to open on March 4. Find them on Facebook for the latest updates.

  • Since only 1% have coeliac disease, trade will be a bit thin once the fad for gluten-free wears off.
