REWORKED plans for the demolition of St John’s Garden Centre in Barnstaple, to make way for 44 new homes, have been submitted to North Devon Council.

Two more homes have been added to the original plans for the site, submitted in October last year.

The family-owned business has already been given permission to build a brand new garden centre alongside the A39 at Roundswell, although the move is dependent on planning permission for the current site at Newport.

According to a design statement submitted as part of the planning application, the development proposes a mix of two, three and four-bedroom homes.

It added: “The resubmitted application reduces the number of large units slightly and incorporates some additional two and three-bed units to give a better mix of dwellings.

“The intention is to create and complement the appearance of the site and provide a distinctive development with a high quality public realm that positively responds to the surroundings.”

Access would be via St John’s Lane.

According to developers: “The existing site access onto St Johns Lane is of good layout and provides good visibility from and of emerging vehicles.

“Adequate on-site vehicle parking and turning facilities for the development will be provided.”

People have until May 16 to comment on the proposals.
